“Wisdom tells me I am nothing. Love tells me I am everything. Between these two banks the river of my life flows.” Nisargadatta Maharaj
The concept of “deep time” was first described in 1788 by theScottish geologist James Hutton, and referred to the vast stretch of geologic history over many eons. Hutton posited that geological features were shaped by cycles of sedimentation and erosion, a process of lifting up then grinding down rocks that required timescales much grander than anything that had been imagined before.
We will never truly comprehend such immensity of time?
Try to imagine the time it would take for a bird carrying a fine silk cloth in it’s beak gently brushing it over Mt. Kilamanjaro to wear that huge mountain down to dust.
Just as the original “deep time “refers to the immense arc of non-human history that shaped the earth as we know it, sacred deep time refers to a consciousness of the infinite arc of human history that extends far beyond us into a future we may never know, and which we are intricately and intimately a part of.
In other words, the consciousness of sacred deep time connects us to all sentient beings as family. In sacred deep time, we belong to the world, and the world belongs to us.
To take this into your bones in a whole new way, listen to this brilliant and heartfelt talk by Tom Chi, Google X Co-founder, on the powerful idea of interconnectedness that all of us should learn as a child!
At this time of year, when we so many human beings everywhere travel to commune with the people they “belong to,” or become hosts to friends and family they have known for years, as well as the new ones who have just come in—there is a portal to sacred deep time. It is easier to drop in and be with the two and four-legged ones who touch your life with the own aliveness….to remember the ones who have held you in the light of their own being….and to feel gratitude for the breath that connects you to eternity.
We call this the Holy Day Season (Holiday Season), and it is.
Here I am with my dog Sophie at my friend Judy’s place, just handing out in sacred deep time, before getting ready to drive to be with my son Jonathan and his husband Danny and their puppy Nina—as well as my other daughter Katrina who is there in Gainesville, Florida. We will face-time with my other daughter Antje, and 2 year-old grandson in Portland, Oregon, as well as with my mother in Nahant, MA. We are all connected!
I want to wish each and every one of you Happy Holidays which is the the bliss of dropping into sacred deep time with those you love. It improves the quality of your life, and of the planet!
Love,
